Maha Shivratri 2021: The festival of Mahashivaratri will be celebrated on 11 March i.e. Thursday this year. The festival of Mahashivaratri is kept for Lord Shiva. Although Shivaratri falls every month, but the Mahashivaratri that falls in the month of Phalgun has special significance. On this occasion, devotees perform Rudrabhishek in Shiva temples. Many people observe Shivaratri fast and also do night awakening.

Why is Maha Shivaratri celebrated?

Monthly Shivaratri is celebrated every month in Hinduism, but the Mahashivratri which falls in the month of Phalgun has special significance. It is believed that Lord Shiva and Parvati were married on this day. According to the scriptures, on the night of Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga with effects similar to crores of suns. After this, the festival of Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month every year.

It is also said that Maa Parvati is a reincarnation of Sati. Mother Parvati wanted to get Shivji as her husband. For this, he had made many efforts to make Shivji his own, Bholenath was not pleased. After this, mother Parvati had done hard meditation in Gaurikund, 5 km from Triyugi Narayan, and tempted Shivji and on this day Shivaji and mother Parvati were married.

However, for the seekers, this is the day they had merged with Mount Kailash. He became stable and immobile like a mountain. In the Yogic tradition, Shiva is not worshiped like any deity. He is considered to be the Adi Guru, the first Guru from whom knowledge originated. After several millennia of meditation, one day he became completely immobile. It was the same day as Maha Shivaratri.
