Hichki Review

Hichki Review

Hichki is a story of a teacher who is showcased as one who could be a mentor, guide and a friend, at times. Naina (Rani Mukherji) is different from other teachers as she has the Tourette Syndrome. With spirit and wit she explains the noises, the hics and clicks, which she makes due to her neurological disorder. A class of 14 scoundrels mock her at every turn but she fights the odds-reactions to her own unsettling, hiccup interrupted speech.

Hichki Review

The kids, who are part of a right to education initiative land up in an elite school where most teachers and kids have a hoity air of ‘high class’.

Naina perseveres relentlessly, as no one gives her a chance to succeed with this bunch of no-gooder students. That in short, is the summary of the movie.

Showcasing an individual with a disorder, having a fighter spirit and a survival instinct makes it a fresh concept. The film talks about fitting in even if you have some disabilities or disadvantages. That very thought fuels the flames of the film.

The film definitely left potential to be explored, but still is insightful, fresh and engaging, although an improved screenplay would have done more justice to the subject and film

There is sensitivity, intelligence and elan in Hichki’s direction, which definitely is worth appreciating. The film showcases a teacher using out-of-the-box learning tools within the school environment, to accelerate the learning and explore the potential of the students, and this definitely adds to the film’s credibility.

The director, Siddharth Malhotra if a fine craftsman and has woven a fine web of delicate intricacies and sensitivity to showcase and touch upon a sensitive touchy topic of neurological disabilities

The second half heightens the drama while the first half is spent building up the plot for the story. Although the film doesn’t change too many gears in the second half.

The climax could have been better, although the film sparks up sensitive emotional responses, but the potential was much more and could have had been explored further…

Rani Mukerji’s performance is Brilliant. She consistently performs and plays out her character with the Tourette syndrome with elan and makes moments of heightened drama look absolutely effortless and flowing

Emotional Intelligence rises high through the movie and it has an air of freshness and insight about it. Surely it will make you nostalgic about your school years and remind you of your favorite teacher and buddies and the fun you had in those growing years.

Although the Screenplay leaves much to be desired, Hichki is surely an experience worth a buck and will definitely stir up sensitive emotions in the hearts and minds of the audience.
