Acclaimed cinematographer-filmmaker KV Anand passed away in the wee hours of Friday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 54.

Anand, who began his career as a photojournalist, won a National Award for his debut film, Thenmavin Kombathu. An erstwhile assistant of PC Sreeram, Anand worked with the former in films like Amaran, Thevara Magan and Thiruda Thiruda.

Following his National award win, Anand worked in many big-ticket films in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. Some of his notable films as a cinematographer were Priyadarshan-Mohanlal’s Chandralekha, Mansoor Khan-Shah Rukh Khan’s Josh, Rajkumar Santhoshi-Ajay Devgn’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Some of his best-known works — Mudhalvan, Nayak, Boys, Sivaji — came from his collaborations with filmmaker Shankar.

Anand debuted as a director with the 2005 Srikanth-Prithviraj film, Kana Kanden. Two years later, Sivaji happened, and with that film, Anand took a break from being a cinematographer and chose to concentrate on his directing career. Known for his grand visuals and unabashed masala films, KV Anand directed Ayan, Maattrraan, and Kaappaan with Suriya, which went on to be milestones in both the actor and the director’s career. He directed Jiiva in the commercially successful political thriller, Ko. Anand also directed Dhanush and Vijay Sethupathi in Anegan and Kavan, respectively.

Known for films with excellent music, Harris Jayaraj was Anand’s frequent collaborator and worked with him in 5 out of his 7 directorials. Other frequent collaborators include editor Anthony and writers Suba. Despite being an acclaimed cinematographer himself, Anand’s directorials always had others wielding the camera.

The news of his demise has left friends and fans alike in shock, and many of them took to social media to express their condolences.
