His journey from being a junior artist to a superstar is an interesting and inspiring story in itself and he has become the role model for many aspiring actors of this age. Nawaz only hopes that his thought on cinema doesn’t get corrupt with commercialization.

For the last almost 20 years Nawazuddin has been at it and has been working nonstop creating exceptional magic on screen be it as a junior artist or as a main lead in films.

His films like Patang, The Lunchbox, Kahani and Haraamkhor, have woed the audience not only in India but across the globe too with his films being screened in most of the major film festivals abroad.

Nawazuddin says “I just hope my thought on cinema does not get corrupt. The kind of cinema I am doing is getting an overwhelming response – be it in India or internationally. The films are getting screened and recognized at prestigious festivals of the world, the appreciation that I get as an actor is great. I just hope this thought of doing good work continues and I do not get corrupt”.

Nawazuddin has come from humble beginnings and he comes from a small town in UP. He graduated in B.Sc. Chemistry and then he moved to Delhi to join NSD (National School of Drama). Finally, after graduating from there he moved his base to Mumbai in 1991 to find work in films.

According to Nawazuddin, it is self-education and observation which form a crucial base in selecting a good script. He is quoted as saying “I am not saying one should go to training school. Self-education is essential as you understand things on your own. The taste of good cinema builds in. Because of education, we get to know how to judge a good script. This is my taste and I will continue doing such kind of cinema.”

Aamir Khans Peepli live catapulted Nawazuddin to instant fame and got him wide recognition as an excellent actor and then came the movies such as Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Badlapur, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Raees, among others, which completely changed his life.

“I did not enter the film industry for recognition. I just wanted to do good work – be it doing street plays or television shows or films, be it doing small or big roles. I had not wished to become a star…” he said. “I just wanted to be busy in Mumbai, just like how I was in Delhi.”
