aboriginal Day

People of tribal caste (World Tribal Day 2021) live in many countries of the world including India. Their living style, food habits and customs and dress etc. are different from other people. Due to being cut off from the mainstream of the society, tribal people all over the world are still very backward.

However, various types of government programs and non-government programs are being run in the country and the world to connect and advance with the mainstream of the society. Talking about India, the people of tribal society have contributed a lot in the independence of the country. Birsa Munda played a big role in the freedom struggle in Jharkhand and Chotanagpur region.

Why is International Aboriginal Day celebrated?

People of tribal community live in more than 90 countries of the world. The population of the tribal community in the world is about 37 crores, in which there are about 5000 different tribal communities and they have about 7 thousand languages. Despite this, the tribal people have to struggle to save their existence, culture and honor. Today, due to many reasons like racism, apartheid, liberalization all over the world, people of tribal community are struggling to save their existence and honor. About 28 percent of the total population of Jharkhand are people of tribal society. These include people from more than thirty two tribal groups like Santhal, Banjara, Bihor, Chero, Gond, Ho, Khond, Lohra, Mai Pahariya, Munda, Oraon etc.

This is the reason that every year 9 August is celebrated as International Tribal Day to promote and encourage the tribal tribes apart from uplifting the tribal society and saving their culture and honor.

On this day, the United Nations and government institutions of many countries as well as people of tribal communities, tribal organizations organize mass celebrations around the world. In these programs, apart from various discussions and concerts, different types of awareness programs are done.

Why is it celebrated only on 9th August?

Let us tell you that the tribals of America have an important contribution in celebrating World Tribal Day. Since Columbus Day is celebrated every year on 12 October in American countries. The Aborigines believed that Columbus represented the colonial system of governance, for which there was a large-scale genocide. Therefore, the tribals demanded that now instead of Columbus Day, Tribal Day should be celebrated.

In 1977, an international conference was organized in Geneva, where a demand was made to celebrate Aboriginal Day instead of Columbus Day. After this, the struggle continued and then the tribal community started celebrating Adivasi Day from 1989. Further public support was received and then on October 12, 1992, the practice of celebrating Tribal Day in place of Columbus Day in American countries started.

Later the United Nations formed the International Working Group for the Rights of the Aboriginal Community, whose first meeting was held on 9 August 1982 in Geneva. In the memory of this meeting, the date of August 9 was announced.
