Today’s Twitter trend is #IndiaOnSale. The #IndiaOnSale hashtag is dominating Twitter today.

Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, referred to Tuesday’s NMP episode as an attempt at creating monopolies in critical areas. This would reduce job opportunities and negatively affect small and medium-sized businesses. Gandhi also accused the center for selling India’s crown jewels.

Gandhi spoke at a press conference alongside P Chidambaram (ex-finance minister), and said that the Narendra Modi-led Government was in the process selling India’s crown jewels, which were built by previous governments using public money for over 70 years.

Monday’s release by Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister, of a four-year National Monetisation Pipeline. It is estimated to be worth Rs 6 lakh crore. The scheme’s main purpose is to unlock the value of brownfield projects through engaging the private sector. They will transfer only revenue rights and not own the projects. Funds generated by the scheme will be used for infrastructure construction across the country.

“There is no land in this area, the entire (NMP), is talking about brownfields projects, where investments have been made. These are assets that are either not fully or partially monetised, or languishing. Sitharaman stated that by inviting private participation, you can better monetise the asset and increase infrastructure investment.
