The airport is located a few kilometers from a mountainous area in Sulu’s main city of Jolo, where the military is fighting an extremist group called Abu Sayyaf. Some of these militants have linked themselves to the Islamic State group.

According to AFP, many of the passengers on the plane had recently graduated in military training and were being deployed as part of a task force fighting extremists in the Muslim-majority troubled region.
