Sambhaji Maharaj was born on 14 May 1657 at Purandar Fort, 50 km from Pune. Sambhaji Maharaj’s childhood was spent in the lap of grandmother, father Shivaji was always busy in service and war. In just eight and a half years, Sambhaji Maharaj had become a master of 14 languages.

Sambhaji Maharaj woke up to see his father’s passion for country service. Just nine years old when children play with toys, Sambhaji reached Agra from Raigad in Maharashtra by sitting on a horse. Here Orangzeb cleverly took him captive along with his father. It was the courage of Sambhaji Maharaj that he not only rescued his father from the captivity of Aurangzeb, but a few days later he himself got free from the fort and reached Raigad.

He is said to have been judicious. Sambhaji Maharaj regularly held the Janata Darbar and the Nyaya Darbar in the absence of his father. Where they would listen to public problems and get justice, they would manage it. For 14 years Sambhaji Maharaj was fully versed in war, governance and economics. The public wanted him very much and respected his decisions.

Sambhaji Maharaj wrote three texts at such a young age. The names of these three texts are Nakhshikhant, Naikibhed and seven centuries. The seven centuries are still very famous.

In 1681 Sambhaji Maharaj was duly accorded the rank of Chhatrapati. It is said that by the age of 31, the extremely powerful, intelligent and self-respecting Sambhaji Maharaj had won 128 wars. Sambhaji Maharaj is said to have been the pioneer of religion and justice and he always worked for the Maratha interests.
