One such inspiring person is Suresh Nanda, who is a living proof of achieving success with strong foresight. Known for his structured approach to decision-making and institution-building, Nanda’s professional journey spans defence services, technology-driven solutions, and hospitality. Each of the milestone he achieved reflect strategic clarity rather than personal branding.
What makes him different from others is his consistency in following principles and taking up every role seriously to create an inspiration.
Early Foundation of Discipline
Suresh Nanda’s early professional training started within a highly structured environment, where accountability, planning, and teamwork were non-negotiable. His formative years were defined by exposure to leadership frameworks that focused on discipline, chain of command, and long-term operational thinking.
This foundation later reflected in his approach to business—particularly his focus on systems, governance, and sustainability rather than short-term outcomes. Analysts often highlight that this foundation enabled him to transition across sectors while maintaining operational coherence.
A Journey from Army Uniform to Enterprise
Suresh Nanda’s career in the Indian Navy began in 1960, when he served in multiple operational and administrative capacities over a span of approximately 15 years. He was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant after completing his training at the Indian Naval Academy.
During this journey, he took up a variety of operational and administrative positions, demonstrating his capacity to lead under duress and adjust to changing circumstances.
In addition to giving him technical and strategic know-how, this stage of life influenced his perspective on organized management, problem-solving, and taking on responsibility.
Following his service, he entered the private sector at a time when such transitions were less common. His early entrepreneurial efforts included trading and industrial supply roles, which later culminated in the establishment of Dynatron Services in 1974. The firm focusses on supplying and servicing propulsion systems for naval and coast guard applications, operating with stringent technical and reliability requirements.
Later, his work in enterprise software and automation projects, mainly a huge government initiative, reflected his ability to adapt to evolving technologies. The project, which focused on transparency and efficiency, was internationally recognised and highlighted the value of locally developed solutions supported by Indian engineering talent.
A Confident Step towards Hospitality
Suresh Nanda’s entry into hospitality reflected the same measured approach seen in his earlier ventures. People working with Mr Nanda often describe him as a person with a lot of humour and forward thinking approach. His willingness to take up challenges and grow led him to enter the hospitality industry. Despite coming from a non-hospitality background, he went further to acquire the Claridges Hotel in New Delhi. A hotel that was once in a despair condition, is currently one of the luxury hotels in India.
To run a luxury hotel, one needs to have a different kind of leadership with consistency in keeping guests’ convenience as the top priority.
Nanda’s management focused on private sector savings, such as cost cuts and guest experience upgrades, which contributed to the group’s robustness without reliance on government subsidies.
International Hospitality and Global Presence
Since he witnessed a good growth in the hospitality sector, Nanda’s focus shifted to developing Taj Dubai, an internationally recognised luxury hospitality project. Suresh Nanda was the first Indian international hotelier to construct Taj Dubai, which is located on Burj Khalifa Street. The property became known for blending Indian hospitality values with global service standards.
