Indian cricket has not only changed its captain, but has also changed its culture. After the BCCI had moved to have Rohit Sharma replaced by Shubman Gill as the ODI captain, one of the former India batters, Manoj Tiwary, unleashed an open attack on the treatment of Rohit and Virat Kohli, claiming that it amounted to nothing short of disrespect
This scandal has become the most recent point of contention in the torturous, although, possibly, revitalizing, period under new Head Coach Gautam Gambhir following whom since July 2024 who has brought with them a new code of discipline and a resolute change in leadership.
The Disrespectful Exit: Tiwary Stokes the Fire.
The high-quality remarks made by Tiwary deal with the perceived disrespect and lack of communication that is shown to the senior players. His remarks are direct reflections of the past controversy of Kohli being ousted as captain of the ODI team in the past, implying a tendency in which the BCCI treats its legends.
Tiwary added, in response to this treatment of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, that Indian cricket is reciprocating them as little more than it is being disrespectful.
That is not all he did because he alleged that the atmosphere in the new regime is causing the old stars to feel unwelcome. Tiwary proposed that this was the force behind the retirement of Virat Kohli in Test cricket and what would soon compel him as well as Rohit Sharma to quit the 50 over game.
The BCCI justifies the change of the captainship as a long-term planning decision in the 2027 ODI World Cup to ensure the new captain, Shubman Gill, can develop his leadership. Nevertheless, the words of Tiwary highlight the contentious issue on how Indian cricket handles the career of its biggest contributors at their later age.
The Gambhirian Spartan Age: Discipline and the Country First Approach.
The introduction of a Spartan-like mentality by the new Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, is an expression coined by spinner Varun Chakravarthy to reflect the extreme professional culture. Gambhir has concentrated on a pass or fail approach towards national responsibility that has succeeded in creating a professional and cohesive team that does not have distractions.
The reins of the Indian cricket longer formats (Test and ODI) are now in the hands of the Gill-Gambhir duo with Gill also acquiring the Test captaincy after Rohit and Kohli had retired it.
The Disciplinary Code of 10 points (Strict).
With the influence of the BCCI taking place under Gambhir, there has been a drastic change to the 10-point disciplinary policy that the BCCI can implement to ensure the country’s first ethos is promoted. Gambhir is reported to have been obsessed with the idea that a national tour is not a holiday.
The important points about this transformative code are:
Mandatory Team Cohesion: The players will be expected to act as a unit and be present in any scheduled practices. They must stay with the group until the formal dissolution of the tour which discourages solitude travel.
Family Travelling restrictions: on long overseas tours (more than 45 days) family visits (partners and children under 18) can only be made once in the series (2 weeks).
Domestic Cricket Requirement: In order to qualify as a selection and central contract player, an individual must play the necessary domestic matches. This is a direct appeal to multi-format players who miss domestic commitments so much.
Limitation on Personal Entourage: No personal staff (managers, chefs, security, etc.) is allowed without prior BCCI consent.
No Commercials: To ensure concentration, personal shoots and endorsements are kept to a minimum during a running series or a tour.
Violation of such new rules will result in serious disciplinary action, including deduction of match fees, central retainer fees and disqualification to participate in tournaments, such as the IPL, which are being organised by BCCI.
The first three episodes together make up the Corruption, Friction and the Counter-Narrative.
The time of this coach has coincided with the mass exodus of the old guard, both Rohit and Kohli out of Test cricket and a giant by the name of Ravichandran Ashwin out of all formats.
Claim made by Manoj Tiwary: Manoj Tiwary came right out and accused Gambhir of intentionally moving to establish a hostile environment to network out older players who may pose a threat to his authority. Tiwary feels that the coach is systematically eliminating the old heads that might question his decisions and compels them to leave the club in a proclaimed image-conscious manner.
The Counter-Narrative: Although the present captain, Shubman Gill, has been accused of a cold environment, the present captain has glorified his relationship with Gambhir. According to Gill, they are talking about keeping players safe and creating a good squad depth, and in particular a reserve fast bowler pool. In addition, the coach recently took the team out to a bonding dinner, which is an action that Gill noted is vital to off-field cohesion.
The Hard Line on Pakistan
In other areas, Gambhir is also able to influence the diplomatic arena through his Hard-line Policy towards cricketing relations with Pakistan as far as the dressing room is concerned.
Hard-line Position: Gambhir has always maintained that he would not play or attend any cricketing event with Pakistan at all, irrespective of the ICC affairs until the terrorism across the borders stops. He has emphasized that there is no more important cricket game than the lives of Indian soldiers.
On-Field Action: The philosophy was allegedly manifested with the Incident of the Asia Cup 2025, when the Indian team supposedly refused to shake their hands with Pakistani opponents after the victory, and devoted the victory to victims of the terror attack.
The key component of the hard-driving, high-stakes culture that Gambhir is intent on inculcating is his firm philosophy that national honor and commitment to the cause of the team is paramount. It is this cut-throat culture that is however now being questioned as to how it had handled two of the largest cricketing legends of India.
Is this the necessary discipline to future success, or a disgraceful termination to cricketing icons?
